Lamar Pulls Away from St. Gregory's, 92-72

BEAUMONT - James Davis led four Cardinals in double-figures with 18 points and Lamar Sanders recorded his fourth double-double of the season to propel Lamar University to a 92-72 win over St. Gregory's in non-conference basketball action Saturday night at the Montagne Center.

Lamar improved to 3-3 overall and St. Gregory's dropped to 2-3 on the season. The Cardinals begin a three-game road trip Friday with a 7 p.m. game at Tulsa. Lamar stays in the city for a Dec. 4 game at Oral Roberts and travels to Houston for a Dec. 6 game at Rice.

The Cardinals didn't retain the lead for good until Darren Hopkins nailed a three-pointer at 13:16 of the first half that put Lamar up 21-18. Leading 24-23, Lamar went on a 14-4 run to extend its lead to 11, 38-27, on a pair of free throw and a layup by Davis at 9:16.

Leading 52-43 at halftime, the Cardinals didn't take complete control of the game until the mid-point of the second half. After Patrick Jones hit a layup to make the score 69-59 with 10:22 remaining, Lamar went on an 11-0 run to extend its lead to 21 points, 80-69. Fueling the run were a pair of 3-pointers by Todd, a trey by Brandon Chappell and a layup by Sanders.

Davis was 7-of-16 from the field and 4-of-5 from the free throw line in scoring his 18 points. He also grabbed nine rebounds, had five assists and four steals. Sanders had 10 points, a game-high 14 rebounds and six assists.

Hopkins chipped in 17 points with three rebounds and two assists. Todd scored a season-high 17 points off the bench on 6-of-14 shooting from the field, including 5-of-9 from 3-point range.

Lamar shot 44.9 percent (35-of-78) from the field, 41.9 percent (13-of-31) from 3-point range and 56.3 percent (9-of-16) from the free throw line. The Cardinals outrebounded SGU 38 to 33; including 18 on the offensive glass that to a 19-7 advantage in second chance points. Lamar also forced 25 turnovers, which led to 33 points.

Jones scored a game-high 31 points on 12-of-15 shooting from the field, including 2-of-3 from 3-point range, and 5-of-5 from the free throw line to lead SGU. He also grabbed seven rebounds and dished out five assists. Terrell Theophile added 24 points and eight rebounds.

SGU shot 54.7 percent (29-of-53) from the field, 33.3 percent (3-of-9) from 3-point range and 91.7 percent (11-of-12) from the free throw line.
