BEAUMONT - Darren Hopkins scored 21 points to pace Lamar, but Bo McCalebb's 27 points and 12 rebounds propelled New Orleans to a 64-62 win over the Cardinals Wednesday night in non-conference men's basketball action at the Montagne Center.
Lamar dropped to 2-3 overall and UNO improved to 2-4 on the season. The Cardinals remain at home, hosting St. Gregory's Saturday night at 7:05 p.m.
UNO, who took a 41-34 lead into the locker room at halftime, scored the first four points of the second half to push its lead to a game-high 11 points, 45-34. Lamar responded with an 11-0 run to tie the game at 45-45. Hopkins hit a pair of three-pointers and Matthew Barrow capped the run with a pair of free throws with 12:46 remaining tied the game.
The game remained close the rest of the way, featuring six ties and eight lead changes in the second half. A pair of McCalebb free throws at 3:31 gave UNO a 62-59 lead. Stephen Musa made 1-of-2 free throws and Barrow made a pair at 1:45 that tied the game at 62-62.
After Barrow misfired on a 3-pointer, McCalebb was fouled driving the lane with 3.6 seconds left in the game. He made both free throws to give the Privateers a 64-62 lead. Lamar's Brandon Chappell fired a deep 3-pointer from the right wing, but it caromed off the rim at the buzzer.
Lamar jumped out to an early lead, using an 8-0 run to take a 13-4 lead on a Barrow 3-pointer at 15:02 of the first half. After UNO's Shaun Reynolds stopped the run with a jumper. The Cardinals responded with another 5-0 run on a Durand Murray layup and a James Davis 3-pointer to take their biggest lead of the game at 18-8 with 13:00 remaining.
UNO used a 20-8 run to take at 26-24 lead on a Joey Barnitz 3-pointer with 6:48 left in the opening stanza. The Privateers went on to outscore the Cardinals 13-8 to end the first half with a 41-34 lead.
Hopkins was 7-of-14 from the field, including 5-of-9 from 3-point range, in scoring his 21 points, which tied his career high. Barrow added 16 points on the strength of 7-of-8 shooting from the free throw line. Lamar Sanders grabbed a team-high seven rebounds and dished out a team-best five assists.
Lamar shot 40.4 percent (19-of-47) from the field, 43.5 percent (10-of-23) from 3-point range and 66.7 percent (14-of-21) from the free throw line. The Cardinals were outrebounded for the first time all season, 24-35.
McCalebb recorded a double-double with 27 points and 12 rebounds. He was 8-of-15 from the field and 11-of-13 from the free throw line. James Parlow added 14 points. Reynolds and Jamie McNeilly each dished out six assists.
UNO shot 46 percent (23-of-50) from the field, 58.3 percent (7-of-12) from 3-point range and 84.6 percent (11-of-13) from the free throw line.
