BEAUMONT - The Lamar University women's tennis team opened the 2006 season in Houston over the weekend, picking up a 4-3 win over Texas A&M Corpus Christi, and a 6-0 loss to the Rice Owls.
The weekend began with a 4-3 win over the Texas A&M Corpus Christi Islanders on Friday at the Houston Racket Club. The Cardinals picked up a point by sweeping doubles play with Andrea Martinez and Tara Shelander defeating Erika Iriate and Felippa Figueiredo 8-2. Pamela Martinez and Tanya Roberts took down Lauren Schmidt and Carmen Abeaboeru 8-6, while Kendal Gibbs and Mariantonietta Guiterrez slammed Lana Burton and Amanda Brahim 8-2.
In singles play, Andrea Martinez defeated Figueiredo 6-4, 6-2 at the number one spot, while Pamela Martinez dropped Burton 6-0, 6-4 in the four-hole. Also picking up a win for the Cardinals in the five spot was Guiterrez, who took down Brahim 6-2, 6-3, giving Lamar four points needed for the win.
Corpus Christi did not go down without a battle though as Abeaboeru knocked off Shelander 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 in the two spot., Iriate took out Roberts 6-1, 6-1 in number three singles and Gibbs lost to Schmidt 6-4, 6-3 in the six spot.
Saturday, the Lady Cardinals fell short against Rice with a 6-0 loss.
Despite losing the match 6-0, the Lady Cardinals picked up a big win in number one doubles as Andrea Martinez and Shelander defeated the duo of Blair DiSesa and Alanna Rodgers who were ranked 30th nationally.
The win in the top doubles spot was all Lamar could muster though, as Pamela Martinez and Roberts fell to Kimberly Patenaude and Madeja Egic 9-8 (4) in number two doubles and Gibbs and Guiterrez lost to Christina Dao and Tiffany Lee 8-3.
In singles play Andrea Martinez dropped her number one singles match 6-3, 6-1 to DiSesa, who is ranked 31st in the country. In the two spot Shelander fell 6-4, 6-0 to Dao, Roberts fell 6-2, 6-1 to Alanna Rodgers in number three singles and Pamela Martinez dropped a 6-0, 6-1 decision to Lee. At the number five spot, Guiterrez was leading the match 6-4, 3-2 before it was suspended due to rain, and Gibbs dropped her match in the six spot 6-3, 6-1 to Amy Cao.
The Lady Cardinals will be in action again on February 4 when they take on St. Edward's in Austin, Texas.
