NACOGDOCHES - Senior Alan Daniels scored a game-high 24 points to lead Lamar to a 70-65 win at Stephen F. Austin in Southland Conference men's basketball action Thursday night at Johnson Coliseum.
Lamar improved to 9-7 overall and 2-1 in SLC play. The Cardinals have won two straight on the road. SFA dropped to 7-6 overall and 0-3 in SLC play. Lamar returns home Saturday for a 7 p.m. against Texas-Arlington at the Montagne Center.
The Cardinals made just one field goal over the last 9:32 of the second half, a Jason Grant dunk at 3:40 that put gave Lamar a six-point lead, 65-59. Daniels' three-pointer and 9:32 put Lamar up six, 59-53.
However, the Cardinals made 5-of-6 free throws over the final 3:12 to seal the win. Brandon Chappell hit a pair from the charity stripe and 3:12 and Blake Whittle made two with 23 second remaining in the game. Daniels and Matthew Barrow each hit a pair of free throws during the field goal drought, making Lamar 9-of-10 from the line in the final 10 minutes of the game.
Lamar shot a blistering 55.2 percent from the field in the first half in sprinting out to a 39-30 halftime lead. Back-to-back three-pointers by Brandon Chappell and Daniels put Lamar up seven, 21-14, at11:55. Leading 22-20, the Cardinals used an 8-1 run to extend their lead to 30-21 on a Daniels jumper at 7:12.
The Cardinals extended to a game-high 11 points on a Barrow jumper at 1:33, giving Lamar a 37-26 lead. Daniels scored 13 of his 24 points in the opening stanza.
Daniels was 8-of-19 from the field, 4-of-10 from 3-point range and 4-of-6 from the free throw line. He grabbed five rebounds and dished out four assists. Thomas Fairley was the only other Cardinals in double-figures with 12 points, 10 coming in the first half.
Whittle provided a spark off the bench with nine points. Chappell and Barrow each added seven points. Chappell had four assists. Lamar shot 44.4 percent from the field, 33.3 percent from 3-point range and 75 percent from the free throw line for the game.
Antuane Miller led SFA with 22 points on 11-of-19 shooting from the field and grabbed eight rebounds. Anthony Paez, Gerald Fonzie and Josh Alexander each added nine points.
For the game, SFA shot 40.7 percent from the field, 23.1 percent from 3-point range and 77.8 percent from the free throw line. The Lumberjacks outrebounded Lamar 37 to 32, which led to a 14 to nine advantage in second chance points.
