LAS CRUCES, New Mexico - Sophomore Andrea Martinez won a three-set singles match, but the Lamar women's tennis team lost a 6-1 non-conference decision to New Mexico State on Friday afternoon at the NMSU Tennis Center.
Martinez, a native of Durango, Mexico, topped Lejla Porobic, 6-3, 6-7 and 10-4. Unfortunately, it was Lamar's only singles win of the day. In the five other singles matches, only freshman Marion Brument, a native of Groffliers, France, was able to take a set off her singles opponent. She won the first set of the No. 5 match, 7-6, before NMSU's Anne Fagegaltier took the next two sets 7-6 and 10-8.
In doubles action, Martinez paired with sophomore Tara Shelander for an 8-5 win at the No. 1 position. Lamar's No. 2 tandem of Kendall Gibbs and Hayley Bakker fell 8-3, while Brument and Marine LeRoy lost 8-2 at the No. 3 spot. The loss dropped the Lady Cardinals to 0-2 on the year. LU continues play on Saturday with a 9 a.m. match against Texas-El Paso.
