LAFAYETTE, La. - Andrea Martinez and Tara Shelander won their third straight doubles match, but it was not enough to lift the Lamar women's tennis team past Southern Miss over the weekend, as the Lady Cardinals lost a 7-0 non-conference dual match to the Golden Eagles.
The loss dropped Lamar to 0-4 on the year, while USM improved to 3-0. LU was also slated to play Louisiana-Lafayette on Sunday, but the match was canceled due to rain.
Friday's match opened with doubles play, where Martinez and Shelander upped their season record to 3-1 with an 8-5 win over the USM No. 1 team of Nicola Slater and Sherry Price. Junior Kendall Gibbs and freshman Marine LeRoy fell 8-4 in the No. 2 spot, while Hayley Bakker and Marion Brument slipped to 1-2 on the year with an 8-5 loss at the No. 3 position.
In singles play, all six Lady Cardinals suffered losses, although four of the six matches went three full sets. Martinez won the first set of the No. 1 singles match, 7-5, but USM's Slater won the second and third 6-3 and 6-1. Shelander fell to Price at the No. 2 by scores of 6-2, 0-6 and 6-3.
Gibbs, a native of Mansfield, lost in straight sets at the No. 3, while Bakker won the first set of the No. 4 match, but dropped the last two frames 7-5, 7-5. Brument, a rookie from Groffliers, France, dropped a hard-fought No. 5 match, 6-4, 4-6 and 7-6. USM's Ali Blackett won the third-set tiebreaker, 7-2. LeRoy, a native of Bordeaux, France, lost in straight sets 6-4 and 6-1.
The Lady Cardinals return to action Friday, Feb. 18 with a non-conference dual match at Centenary College in Shreveport, Louisiana.
