FRISCO, Texas – Lamar University sophomore defensive back Caleb Holmes has been named Southland Conference Special Teams Player of the Week announced league officials Monday morning. The honor - the team's second of the season - comes following Holmes' efforts in helping lead Lamar to a 49-18 victory at Nicholls Saturday afternoon.
 
Since head coach Pete Rossomando's arrival, Lamar has received 22 conference player of the week awards, with 15 of those coming on special teams.
 
Holmes, a native of DeSoto, Texas, ended the day with a kickoff return of 86 yards for a touchdown and two punt returns for 14 yards. Holmes' 86-yard return went for a touchdown and came at the perfect time for Big Red.
 
After jumping out to a 14-0 first quarter lead, Nicholls appeared to have stolen back the momentum with a drive that led to a touchdown trimming the Cardinals' lead in half. That momentum was gone moments later when Holmes fielded the ensuing kickoff on his own 14-yard line and weaved his way through traffic 86 yards for the score.
 
The return was Holmes' first of the season, so he doesn't officially rank among the league leaders but he is the first player in the Southland to return a kick for a touchdown this season.
