NATCHITOCHES, La. – Lamar University couldn't find the back of the net Thursday evening as Northwestern State scored twice in the second half to defeat the Cardinals, 2-0. The loss puts an end to Big Red's seven-match unbeaten streak.
The Cardinals (4-2-3, 1-1 Southland) finished the match with 11 shots and held an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks. Sophomore goalkeeper Eloise Bywater recorded two saves in the loss.
LU controlled much of the possession during the opening 30 minutes, placing four shots on goal. The Cardinals nearly broke through in the 26th minute when a header from Kamryn Harvey struck the crossbar and stayed out of the goal. NSU quickly responded, moving the ball to the Cardinals' side of the field and forcing Bywater to make a save on the ensuing possession.
The Demons broke the scoreless deadlock in the 54th minute to take a 1-0 lead. The Cardinals nearly found the equalizer three minutes later from a shot by Marissa Gross that was stopped by the Demons' goalkeeper. NSU kept the Cardinals off the scoreboard for the remainder of the match and added an insurance goal in the 75th minute on a converted penalty kick.
The Cardinals will close out September Sunday when they return home to host Nicholls at the LU Soccer Complex. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m., and the match will be streamed on ESPN+.
