Harvey's Late Game-Winner Gives Cardinals Third-Straight Shutout Dub

BEAUMONT, TexasWith just 10 seconds remaining, Lamar University's Kamryn Harvey netted the game-winner to break the scoreless tie against UT Rio Grande Valley in Thursday's Southland Conference opener. This win marks Big Red's seventh-straight unbeaten match, third consecutive shutout victory, the team's fifth shutout of the season, and the 37th shutout of the Nathan Kogut era.

The Cardinals (4-1-3, 1-0-0 SLC) recorded 17 shots and earned seven corner kicks for the night. Goalkeeper Keely Thomas was outstanding between the posts, making five saves to record her second shutout of the season.

LU opened the match with a pair of shots in the eighth minute but then spent much of the first half defending its own net. UTRGV fired six shots over the opening 45 minutes, while Thomas made saves in the 16th and 38th minutes. The Cardinals nearly took the lead before halftime when a shot hit the goalpost in the final minute.

Big Red controlled the second half, outshooting the Vaqueros, 14-5, but could not find the back of the net for more than 44 minutes. UTRGV nearly broke through late in regulation, but Thomas leaped to deflect a shot over the crossbar for a corner kick. With less than 30 seconds remaining, LU earned one final scoring opportunity when Emma Oubrik delivered a corner kick into the box. After Riley Wilson's shot was blocked in front of goal, Harvey pounced on the loose ball and needed two attempts to push it across the goal line for the game-winner.

Following an undefeated homestand, the Cardinals will hit the road for their next match when they face Northwestern State Thursday, Sept. 24, in Natchitoches, La. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+.
