FRISCO, Texas – Lamar University redshirt freshman kicker Andres Sandoval has been named Southland Conference Special Teams Player of the Week for his efforts in helping the Cardinals defeat Idaho in Moscow over the weekend. It marks the first weekly superlative in Sandoval's career, and the first of the season for Big Red.
 
Since head coach Pete Rossomando's arrival, Lamar has received 21 conference player of the week awards, with 14 of those coming on special teams.
 
Sandoval played a key role in the Cardinals' 23-17 victory at Idaho to improve to 2-1 overall. He ended the day with 11 points while going 3-of-4 on field goals and 2-of-2 on extra point attempts. He converted field goals of 36, 48 and 45 yards with his lone miss being a 50-yard attempt.
 
Despite moving the football, the Cardinals struggled to push it across the goal line in the first quarter and entered the second 15 minutes of action trailing 3-0. Sandoval's first field goal tied the game just 45 seconds into the second quarter, and midway through the quarter he would give LU a lead it would not relinquish when he drilled a 48-yarder with 8:15 remaining in the half.
 
Those two scores seemed to ignite the Cardinals' offense as Big Red closed out the half with two touchdowns, including the second with just a second remaining on the clock.
 
The Cardinals enter their bye week preparing for the Southland Conference opener. Lamar will close out this current three-game road swing Saturday Sept. 26^th at Nicholls. The contest is set for a 3 p.m. kick off from Guidry Stadium.
