HOUSTON, Texas — Lamar University edged Houston Christian 5-3 in Game 2 on Saturday afternoon at Husky Field.
Game 3 was postponed due to lightning in the area and rescheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday, May 10.
Theo Kummer put the Cardinals on the board in the second inning with a solo home run to left field.
HCU answered in the bottom half of the inning, scoring on a one-out RBI single to left by Anthony Avalos.
LU took the lead in the top of the fourth with a sacrifice fly to left center by
A.J. Taylor.
The Cardinals scored three runs in the fifth inning to extend the lead to 5-1.
Jake Wagoner and
Beau Durbin crossed the plate on a throwing error by the catcher following stolen bases of second and third.
Lane Sparks capped the inning with an inside-the-park home run to right center that eluded a diving center fielder.
Jeremy Rader drove in a run on a fielder's choice to the pitcher after a pair of singles, trimming the deficit to three in the bottom of the fifth.
Walker Bazile cut the deficit to two with a solo home run to right field in the bottom of the sixth.
LU's pitching staff retired the final nine HCU batters in order to secure the victory.

- Wagoner finished 2 for 4 with a single, a double and two stolen bases. Wagoner has hit 4 for 8 in the series with a double, triple and two RBIs.
- Durbin went 2 for 5 with a single and a double, extending his hitting streak to four games.
- Sparks hit his fifth home run of the season going 1 for 4 with an inside-the-park home run, a walk and an RBI.
- Kummer went 1 for 3 with a home run and an RBI. Kummer has three home runs this season.
- Evans had a single to go 1 for 3, extending his on-base streak to eight games.
- Blayne Fritcher improved to 4-4 after allowing one hit and one earned run in 2.1 innings pitched with one strikeout.
- Travis Lutz earned his second save after throwing two shutout innings without allowing a hit while striking out two batters.
- The LU pitching staff recorded six strikeouts, bringing the season total to 445. That mark ranks seventh in program history for a single season, surpassing the previous total of 443 set in 2002.
