Cardinals drop twin bill to Lions

BEAUMONT, Texas — In a marquee matchup between two teams tied for first place in the Southland Conference, Southeastern Louisiana outscored Lamar University 16-2 to sweep a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Vincent-Beck Stadium.

The Lions held off the Cardinals with a 6-2 win in Game 1 before completing the sweep with a seven-inning, 10-0 victory in Game 2.

GAME 1

Southeastern Louisiana took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a two-out RBI groundout by Justin Williams.

Ben Robichaux extended the advantage with a leadoff solo home run to deep center in the second, clearing the wall at an estimated 430 feet.

LU cut the deficit to one in the bottom of the third.

Balin Valentine reached on a one-out infield single and moved to second on a passed ball before Tab Tracy was hit by a pitch.

Beau Durbin followed with an RBI single up the middle.

The Lions answered in the top of the fourth, scoring on a two-out RBI groundout by Alex Perry.

Tracy hit a double through the left side in the fifth and later advanced to third on an error by the second baseman.

A.J. Taylor drove in a run with a fielder's choice to third, pulling the Cardinals back within one.

LU had an opportunity to tie or take the lead in the sixth, loading the bases with three walks, but was unable to capitalize.

Perry pushed Southeastern Louisiana's lead to two with a solo home run to right-center in the seventh.

Connor Cuff added a leadoff solo shot to right in the eighth, and the Lions closed out the scoring on an RBI groundout by Peyton Woods in the ninth.

GAME NOTES
  • Theo Kummer led the way going 2 for 5 with two doubles.
  • Durbin finished 1 for 5 with a single and an RBI.
  • Tracy went 1 for 4 with a double.
  • Brayden Evans was walked to go 1 for 3 with a single.
  • Valentine finished 1 for 2 with a single and run scored.

GAME 2

Southeastern Louisiana's offense stayed hot in Game 2, belting three home runs to finish the day with six.

Williams jump-started the Lions in the first inning with a two-run double to left field, giving Southeastern a 3-0 lead.

The Lions added two more runs in the third, highlighted by a two-run double from Dane Watts.

Cuff connected for a solo home run in the fifth inning, and Brody Capps followed with a solo shot in the sixth as Southeastern extended its lead to nine runs.

Cuff capped the scoring with his third home run of the day in the top of the seventh.

After Taylor's two-out triple in the first inning, the Cardinals were held hitless until Tracy singled to left center in the sixth.

GAME NOTES
  • Tracy went 1 for 3 with a single to extend his on-base streak to 10 games.
  • Taylor had the triple to go 1 for 3 to extend his on-base streak to six games.
  • Easton Culp had a pinch-hit single to go 1 for 1.
