Cardinals drop series opener to New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS, La. — New Orleans used an eight-run rally in the third inning to secure an 11-7 victory over Lamar University in Game 1 on Friday night at Maestri Field.

LU is now in a two-way tie for first place in the Southland Conference.

The Cardinals plated three runs in the top of the third, highlighted by a two‑out, two‑RBI single through the right side from Tab Tracy.

LU extended the advantage to 4-0 one inning later when Theo Kummer hit a solo home run in the fourth.

New Orleans answered in a big way in the bottom half of the frame, sending 11 batters to the plate and scoring eight runs on five hits.

The rally was fueled by a pair of three‑run home runs to left field from Miles Curley and Eli Tidwell.

The Cardinals chipped away with a run in the fifth on Hector Rodriguez's RBI single to left center, but the Privateers quickly matched it in the bottom half with an RBI single from Tidwell.

Curley added to New Orleans' lead in the sixth with an RBI single to left, pushing the cushion to five runs.

Rodriguez tallied his second RBI of the night in the seventh on a groundout to the shortstop, before the Privateers responded again with a two‑out RBI single to shallow left off the bat of Kareh Valentine in the bottom half of the frame.

A.J. Taylor capped the scoring with a solo home run in the ninth inning to close out the game.
