Cardinals bounce back with 7-2 win to even up series

NEW ORLEANS, La. — Theo Kummer stayed hot at the plate, driving in four runs, while Jarret Williams earned his first collegiate victory as Lamar University evened the series with a 7-2 win over New Orleans on Saturday afternoon at Maestri Field.

Jake Wagoner gave the Cardinals a 1-0 lead with a first-pitch, one-out solo home run in the second inning.

New Orleans answered in the third, taking a 2-1 advantage on a two-run homer by Dylan Biddick.

The LU defense then delivered a pair of game-defining plays in the bottom of the fourth.

Hector Rodriguez made a diving stop at third base and threw the runner out at first, and Tab Tracy followed by catching a fly ball and gunning a runner down at the plate for an inning-ending double play, with Wagoner applying the tag.

Kummer belted his second home run of the weekend, launching a go-ahead, two-run shot to left field in the fifth inning.

The Cardinals erupted for four runs in the sixth inning, opening the rally with three straight singles, including bunt singles by Tracy and A.J. Taylor.

Braden Benton drew a bases-loaded walk, and Kummer followed with a two-RBI single through the left side.

The rally was capped when Benton scored from second on a throwing error by the shortstop.

Williams tossed five shutout innings allowing just two hits with four strikeouts.
