Cardinals fall to Colonels in 11 innings

THIBODAUX, La. — Nicholls rallied to defeat Lamar University, 11-10, on a walk-off RBI single by Nico Rijo-Berger in 11 innings Saturday night on Ben Meyer Diamond at Ray E. Didier Field.

The Cardinals jumped on the scoreboard early in the top of the first inning.

Tab Tracy opened the game with a leadoff single through the right side and Lane Sparks followed with a one-out walk.

Beau Durbin then drove in the first run with an RBI double to left.

Hector Rodriguez kept the momentum going, lining a two-RBI single to right to give the Cardinals a 3-0 lead.

Nicholls answered in the bottom half of the inning, loading the bases on a single and two walks.

Keegan Giger brought home a run with a sacrifice fly to left, and Greyson Shafer followed with an RBI single through the left side to cut the deficit to 3-2.

LU answered with three more runs in the top of the second inning.

Balin Valentine sparked the rally with a single, beginning a string of three consecutive hits capped by Brayden Evans' RBI single to right center.

Lane Sparks then hit a hard ground ball to second and reached on a fielding error, allowing another run to score and extending the lead to 6-2.

With two outs in the top of the third, Tracy drilled a two-run home run to right, pushing the LU lead to six runs.

Nicholls cut the deficit in half with a one-out, two-run home run by Shafer in the bottom of the third.

Theo Kummer made the score 9-4 with a one-out RBI double to right center in the top of the fourth.

The Colonels rallied to pull within one in the bottom of the fourth, scoring four runs with two outs.

Shafer highlighted the frame with a double to left center for his fourth RBI.

Nicholls tied the game in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single to right by Caston Thompson.

Logan Terry gave the Colonels their first lead of the night with a one-out solo home run to right field in the bottom of the eighth.

With two outs in the top of the ninth, Valentine hit an RBI infield single to the second baseman.

The initial call was a groundout, but after review, the call was overturned, tying the game at 10-10.

Nicholls put runners in scoring position with a pair of one-out walks before RijoBerger delivered a walk-off RBI single up the middle in the bottom of the 11th.

GAME NOTES
  • Tracy had a four-night going 4 for 5 with three singles, a home run, a walk and two RBIs.
  • This was Tracy's second four-hit performance since going 4 for 5 in Game 2 against Stephen F. Austin while it's his 12th multi-hit game of the season.
  • Rodriguez went 4 for 4 with three singles, a double and three RBIs.
  • Rodriguez tallied his fifth multi-game of the season.
  • Kummer finished 2 for 4 with a single, double and an RBI.
  • Valentine ended up going 2 for 6 with two singles and RBI.
  • The Cardinals hit five doubles while tallying more hits than Nicholls, 16-13.
  • The LU pitching staff finished with 15 strikeouts.
  • Travis Lutz fanned a season high nine batters in 4.1 innings of relief while allowing three hits.
  • Blayne Fritcher struck out three batters while allowing one hit in 2.1 innings of relief.
