BEAUMONT, Texas — Lamar University freshman
Jarret Williams was named a first team Perfect Game College Baseball Midseason Freshman All-American, the organization announced Wednesday afternoon.
Williams becomes the first player in program history to earn the distinction from Perfect Game.
The last Lamar player recognized by Perfect Game as a midseason freshman standout was lefthander Jonathan Dziedzic in 2010.
Williams has been a steady presence on the mound throughout the season, posting a 1.61 ERA with 25 strikeouts and a 1.04 WHIP across 28 innings pitched.
The lefthander has made seven appearances, including six starts, while holding opponents to a .178 batting average.
He ranks second on the team in strikeouts, ERA, and innings pitched, and did not allow an earned run in his first five collegiate appearances.
Williams made his LU debut in Game 3 against Oakland University on Feb. 15, striking out five batters in 2.1 innings of hitless relief.
His longest outing of the season came in Game 1 against McNeese, where he tossed a one-hitter over six shutout innings, allowing one walk while striking out five.
Earlier in the year, Williams delivered another strong performance in Game 1 against Stephen F. Austin, surrendering just two hits over four innings with one strikeout and no walks.
Jarret is the son of former LU pitcher Randy Williams who played in Beaumont from 1995-1997 before being drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the 12th round and enjoying a five-year career.
