Cardinals fall to SFA in series finale

NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Lamar University carried a 9-3 lead into the eighth inning before Stephen F. Austin scored 11 runs in the frame to secure a 14-11 win Sunday afternoon at Pilgrim's Park.

The Lumberjacks wasted no time, grabbing a 1-0 lead in the top of the first behind back-to-back one‑out doubles.

LU got on the board when Theo Kummer drew a leadoff walk and Jake Wagoner followed with a single through the right side.

Brayden Evans moved both runners over with a sacrifice bunt, setting up an RBI single from Balin Valentine.

Tab Tracy and A.J. Taylor kept the inning rolling with back‑to‑back RBI singles up the middle.

Evans extended the lead in the top of third with an RBI double off the wall in deep center. Valentine then tallied his second RBI when he drew a bases-loaded walk.

The Cardinals pushed across three runs in the fifth.

Kevin Duran started the scoring with a one‑out, 365‑foot solo home run to left.

Valentine was hit by a pitch, Tracy singled, and Taylor drew a walk to load the bases.

Beau Durbin brought in a run with a fielder's choice to short, and Braden Benton followed with an RBI single to left center.

Evans pushed the lead to 9-1 in the top of the sixth with a 418‑foot solo home run to right field.

Chris Olivier retired 14 of his last 15 batters before Mark Henning broke the streak with a solo home run to right in the bottom of the sixth.

Juan Cantua later cut into the deficit with an RBI single to center.

SFA sent 16 batters to the plate in the bottom of the eighth, taking a 14-9 lead.

The Lumberjacks recorded seven hits in the inning and drew five walks.

LU attempted a late rally as Durbin brought in a run with a sacrifice fly to center, followed by an RBI single up the middle from Hector Rodriguez.
