Southland Conference Play to Open With Border Showdown Against McNeese

BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University opens Southland Conference play by heading across the border to face McNeese for the first series of the season. The first game Friday will start at 6 p.m., while Saturday will be a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
 
PREVIOUSLY
LU plated seven runs in the sixth inning to defeat Sam Houston, 10-5, in the first home contest of the season Tuesday evening. Isabella Flores recorded two hits, including a three-run triple, while Ariel Flores drilled a three-run homer. Kaylee Cuevas gave up a pair of homers but got the victory in four inning of relief with two strikeouts.
 
PREPARE FOR TROUBLE AND MAKE THAT DOUBLE
The Cardinals are currently leading the Southland Conference with 39 doubles, which is five ahead of UIW. The quartet of Cala Wilson (2nd; eight), Cimara-lei Wessling (4th; seven), Isabella Flores (T6th; six) and Makenzie Wright (T6th; six) have recorded 27 doubles between them and are ranked in the conference's top 10 list in that category.  
 
GRILL US SOME RBIs SOPHOMORES
Last season, Wilson started her freshman campaign with eight RBIs in her first 21 games of the season before finishing with 35. Through 21 games this season, she has 17. Meanwhile, Windham (16) needs just five RBIs to match her freshman season-high of 21.

LAST TIME VS. MCNEESE
The Cardinals pulled off their first-ever series victory over McNeese last season in Beaumont. After dropping game one, 6-5, LU shut out the Cowgirls by scores of 7-0 and 4-0. Cala Wilson played a big role in the two wins with four RBIs on four hits, including two doubles and a triple. Smith pitched a complete-game shutout in the 4-0 win.
 
ABOUT THE COWGIRLS
The Cowgirls (16-7) recently defeated Houston for the second time in three meetings by the final of 14-9. Reigning SLC Hitter of the Week Nyjah Fontenot has driven in 14 RBIs on eight hits over the last six games and is one of two players in the conference with 30 hits along with Ellie Vance (SFA). A pair of Taylors lead the pitching staff as Brookelyn Taylor has a 3.52 ERA and a team-high 36 strikeouts, while Maddie Taylor leads with six victories in the circle.
 

UP NEXT
The Cardinals will take on Houston in a midweek road contest Tuesday at Cougar Softball Stadium. The first pitch is scheduled to be thrown at 6 p.m. and the game will be streamed on ESPN+.
