BEAUMONT, Texas — Lamar University dropped a 7-4 decision to Sam Houston on Tuesday night at Vincent-Beck Stadium, snapping the Cardinals' six-game winning streak against Conference USA opponents dating back to 2024.
Sam Houston struck first in the second inning when Cade Corcoran launched a 370-foot solo home run to give the Bearkats a 1-0 lead.
Lamar evened the score in the bottom of the fourth as
Lane Sparks scored from second base after the Sam Houston right fielder misplayed a fly ball off the bat of
Tab Tracy.
The Cardinals took their first lead of the night in the fifth.
Beau Durbin and
Hector Rodriguez recorded back-to-back one-out infield singles before advancing to second and third on a wild pitch.
Brayden Evans followed with a sacrifice fly to center to make it 2-1.
Sam Houston answered with a four-run sixth inning.
The first two batters reached on a walk and a hit by pitch before a sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position.
Easton Dean drove in the tying run with an RBI single to right.
After Blake Brown was hit by a pitch, Caleb Cotton delivered a two-run single to center to put the Bearkats in front.
Hunter Alvord capped the rally with a sacrifice fly.
Lamar trimmed the deficit in the seventh.
A.J. Taylor reached on a leadoff bunt single and advanced to second on a throwing error.
With two outs, Rodriguez came through again, driving a single through the left side to cut the margin to 6-4.
The Bearkats added two insurance runs in the eighth.
Jace Martinez drew a leadoff walk, stole second and third, and scored on an RBI groundout by Brown.
With two outs, Sam Houston loaded the bases following a Cotton single, a Lamar fielding error and a walk.
Cotton later scored on a wild pitch.
Lamar scored once in the bottom of the eighth when
Colby Christian crossed the plate following a failed double play attempt, but the Cardinals were unable to complete the comeback.
