CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A&M-Corpus Christi scored early and never looked back, taking Game 1 from Lamar, 6-1, Friday night at Chapman Field.
The Islanders struck for four runs in the first inning as the first four batters reached on two singles, a walk and a hit by pitch.
Jarrett Flaggert opened the scoring with a two-RBI single to center field.
Hunter Azemar followed with a sacrifice bunt that plated a run, and another score came home on a fielding error by the second baseman.
A&M-Corpus Christi added to its lead in the third inning by capitalizing on another Lamar miscue. Christian Smith-Johnson scored after reaching on a two-out single.
Lamar broke up the shutout in the top of the fourth inning.
Beau Durbin and
Hector Rodriguez opened the frame with back-to-back one-out singles, and
Brayden Evans advanced Durbin to third before
A.J. Taylor drove him in with an RBI double to left.
The Islanders tacked on their final run in the eighth inning when a two-out balk brought home a run with the bases loaded.
