HATTIESBURG, Miss. -
Reagan Smith earned her second complete game victory Sunday as Lamar University got revenge against Morehead State, 6-2, to conclude the Southern Miss Hub City Classic. The Cardinals finished the tournament 3-2 and evened their overall record at 10-10.
Riley Whitley (RBI) and
Kamaryn Radford recorded two hits while
Isabella Flores drove in a pair of runs.
Cala Wilson went yard for the second time over the weekend. Smith struck out eight batters while allowing two runs on five hits. Through her two games in the tournament, the Santa Fe native compiled a 1.00 ERA and struck out 18 batters.
The Eagles scratched a run across in the first inning, but Wilson led off the top of the second with a solo blast. Whitley singled and came in to score on a groundout by
Sicily Windham to give the Cardinals the lead. Two more runs came across in the third as Flores singled in
Gracee Hess before scoring on a
Makenzie Wright double. Smith got into a groove by allowing just one hit (in the second) through four innings.
Each side scored a run in the fifth with Whitley picking up an RBI single. One inning later, Flores's sac fly to right scored Radford as LU took a 6-2 lead. That was enough for Smith, who retired the last seven hitters, including three strikeouts.
The Cardinals are ready to return to the LU Softball Complex for their home opener against Sam Houston Tuesday. The first pitch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+.
