Seven-Run Outburst in Sixth Propels LU to First Home Victory

BEAUMONT, Texas - Lamar University plated seven runs in the sixth inning against Sam Houston Tuesday at the LU Softball Complex and turned a one-run deficit into a 10-5 victory. This was the first time that LU swept two games from the Bearkats in the same season since 2018.

Isabella Flores (two hits) and Ariel Flores (HR) each drove in three RBIs while Sicily Windham added a pair with her game-winning hit. Gracee Hess and Makenzie Wright recorded two hits each. Madison Guidry (3.0 IP, one run, two hits) started the game for the Cardinals, but Kaylee Cuevas' four innings of work (four runs, five hits, two strikeouts) earned her the victory in relief.

After back-to-back singles opened LU's first inning, Ariel stepped up and drilled a three-run homer to left center. The Bearkats got one back in the second with a solo shot to right and threatened with two runners on with one out in the third. Guidry managed to get out of the inning unscathed with a line drive double play.

Cuevas came into pitch the fourth inning and kept the two-run lead into the sixth, but SHSU would rally back for three runs to take the 4-3 lead. LU loaded the bases in its half of the sixth with one out when Roxy Thompson was hit by the pitch to score the tying run. Then, Windham broke the tie with a two-run single to right. Hess (1B) and Isabella (3B) drove in the next four runs to end the sixth up 10-4. The Bearkats closed to within five in the seventh before Cuevas finished the contest with a groundout.

LU will open Southland Conference play by heading across the border to meet McNeese in Lake Charles, La. Friday's game starts at 6 p.m. while Saturday's doubleheader opens at 1 p.m.
