Box Score 2 HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Lamar University ended the second day of the Hub City Classic by splitting its two games. The Cardinals defeated Jackson State, 12-0, in the morning contest but dropped a 3-0 decision to tournament-host Southern Mississippi, 3-0, in the afternoon tilt.
The Cardinals enter the final day of the tournament with a 9-10 (.474) overall record.
Lamar's offense was led by
Gracee Hess and
Kamaryn Radford in the first game. Radford went 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs and two runs scored.
Gracee Hess added a 2-for-3 effort with a double, RBI and two runs scored.
Lamar University struck early in the first game and left no doubt hanging a five-run second on the scoreboard and never looked back. Big Red opened the inning by getting runners on first and second with no outs. Two batters later,
Kamaryn Radford got an infield hit scoring
Makenzie Wright from third. After scoring a second run when
Sicily Windham was hit by a pitch,
Cimara-lei Wessling singled through the left side driving in two more.
Despite tacking on two more in the sixth and hanging another five-run inning in the seventh for the knockout punch, the second inning would be all the offense senior
Reagan Smith needed. The Santa Fe, Texas, native went the distance allowing no runs on just five hits with three walks. Smith was nearly untouchable fanning 10 Tigers on the day.
In the second game, the Cardinals struggled to get the bats going. Southern Miss plated two runs in the bottom half of the first inning to take an early lead and tacked on another in the home half of the third. Unfortunately, Big Red was unable to cut into the USM advantage dropping the second game of the day.
The Cardinals return to action Sunday when they close out the Hub City Classic against Morehead State. The game against the Eagles is set for a 10 a.m. first pitch.
