Big Red Splits Hub City Classic Doubleheader

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Isabella Flores drove in five runs in Friday's doubleheader as Lamar University came away with a split at the Southern Miss Hub City Classic.

The Cardinals led 7-0 after three innings in the first game against Morehead State, but couldn't hold on as they fell, 8-7.  Flores collected four RBIs on a pair of two-run doubles to lead the Cardinals. Also with two doubles was Cala Wilson, who finished with a team-high three hits. Madison Guidry took the loss while striking out six batters.

The Cardinals then snapped a five-game losing streak by defeating Chattanooga 7-1 in the second game. Cala Wilson (HR, RBI) and Ariel Flores (2B, RBI) finished with two hits while Gracee Hess picked up two RBIs. Kaylee Cuevas went the distance by allowing a run on eight hits with four strikeouts.

Game 1: Morehead State 8, LU 7

After LU scored the first run on a wild pitch, Isabella doubled in two runs in the first and third innings to make it 5-0 in the Cardinals' favor. Moments later, Sicily Windham doubled in Wilson and Roxy Thompson and LU led by seven. Guidry started the game off strong in the circle with three scoreless innings.

As the fourth inning got underway, the momentum shifted to the Eagles, who rallied to score six runs over the next two innings. The Cardinals kept their one-run lead into the bottom of the seventh and were one out away from victory. MSU came through with two clutch hits to hand the Cardinals a heartbreaking defeat.

Game 2: LU 7, Chattanooga 1

Isabella (sac fly) and Ariel (RBI groundout) put the Cardinals on the board with two runs in the second inning. Cuevas allowed the tying runs to get on base in the third and fourth innings, but was able to get out of trouble unscathed.

Wilson led off the fourth inning with a solo homer while the Cardinals got three more runs from a Hess single, a hit by pitch to Windham and an RBI groundout from Whitley. Hess added another RBI knock in the fifth inning to give the Cardinals their second 7-0 lead for the day. This time, LU wouldn't relinquish that lead as the Mocs only scored one run in the seventh before the last out was recorded.

The Cardinals will have two games Saturday, starting with Jackson State (9 a.m.). LU will then take on the hosts at 2 p.m.
