BEAUMONT, Texas — The first home run of the season for the Lamar University baseball team came at the perfect time.
With the score tied at 1-1 in the bottom of the seventh and runners at first and second with two outs,
Beau Durbin crushed a three-run shot, 395-feet into right center, which proved to be the game winner.
The Cardinals notched their first win over a Big 12 opponent since 2023 as they defeated the Kansas Jayhawks, 4-1, on Wednesday night at Vincent-Beck Stadium.
Kansas got on the board first in the top of the third when Max Soliz Jr. drew a bases-loaded walk.
The LU pitching staff kept the Jayhawks hitless for three straight innings.
After a leadoff single by Durbin in the bottom of the first, LU did not tally another hit until the sixth inning when
Tab Tracy hit a ground-rule double down the left field line.
Braden Benton then lofted a bloop RBI single into shallow right near the line that tied up the game.
To begin the bottom of the seventh,
Reese Beheler drew a leadoff walk and then
A.J. Taylor put down a bunt single to third to setup Durbin's clutch home run.
This marked LU's second win over Kansas in program history. The Cardinals' first win over the Jayhawks came in 2004.
