AUSTIN, Texas — On Tuesday night the Lamar University baseball team jumped out to a three-run lead over the No. 3 ranked Texas Longhorns.
The Cardinals held a 4-2 lead until the Longhorns sent 12 batters to the plate to rally for six runs in the fifth.
Texas pushed across five runs in the seventh to end the game early courtesy of the run rule to come away with the 14-4 victory at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
LU had its first two batters get on base to start the second inning as
Braden Benton drew a walk and
Beau Durbin hit a double to left.
Balin Valentine then ripped a double down the right field line to drive in two runs.
With two outs,
Jake Wagoner collected his first hit of the season with an RBI single up the middle.
Texas answered back in the bottom half of the frame with two runs.
Carson Tinney hit a leadoff home run while Temo Becerra followed up with a one out RBI single up the middle.
The LU pitching staff kept the Longhorns hitless over the next two innings.
Wagoner got things going in the top of the fifth with a double down the line in right. He later advanced to third on a wild pitch to setup the RBI groundout to second by
Kevin Duran.
The Texas rally was sparked by an RBI triple to right center from Adrian Rodriguez.
Becerra gave his team the lead with a two RBI triple to right. The lead was then extended to four runs after an RBI infield single by Jayden Duplantier and an RBI double from Ashton Larson.
The Cardinals reached base one more time on an infield single by
A.J. Taylor in the top of the seventh.
Maddox Monsour delivered the game-ending three RBI triple, the third of the game for Texas, down the right field line.
