Lamar Splits Carl Vincent Doubleheader Saturday

LAKE CHARLES, La. – Lamar University concluded the Carl Vincent Insurance Invitational with a split Saturday, losing to Austin Peay, 5-4, and then taking down Illinois-Chicago, 14-5 in five innings.

LU's seventh-inning rally came up short in game one, 5-4, against the Governors. Isabella Flores led with two hits and an RBI while Cala Wilson delivered a two-run homer. Ava Prejean took the loss with one inning and allowed three runs.

The Cardinals bounced back in game two with a seven-run fifth inning to beat UIC, 14-5. Isabella Flores and Riley Whitley recorded three hits while Sicily Windham (RBI), Cimara-lei Wessling (two RBI) and Makenzie Wright (three RBI) finished with two hits.

Game 1: Austin Peay 5, LU 2
Lamar jumped out for two runs in the first inning as Wright reached on a fielder's choice to score Whitley while Flores doubled to right and scored Wilson. APSU answered back with an RBI double in the bottom of the first to get on the board before taking the lead with two runs in the second.

The Governors added two runs in the fifth inning to lead 5-2. Windham led off the seventh with a single, but was then out on a double play. After Wessling drew a walk, Wilson homered to left field to cut the deficit to one before the final out was recorded.

Game 2: LU 14, Illinois-Chicago 5 (5 Inn.)

The Cardinals led 3-2 after the first inning when Wessling doubled in two runs before scoring on a fielder's choice from Wright. Each side then scored three times as LU got RBI singles by Thompson and Windham plus a fielder's choice from Radford. One inning later, Wright homered to double LU's lead to 7-5.

LU broke the game open in the fifth with seven two-out runs. Three consecutive RBI doubles by Wilson, Wright and Isabella Flores made it 11-5. Then, Ariel Flores came on to pinch hit and launched a three-run bomb on the first pitch she faced.

The Cardinals will have their first road game of the season against Sam Houston Tuesday at the Bearkat Softball Complex in Huntsville. The first pitch will be delivered at 6 p.m. and be streamed on ESPN+.
