HUNTSVILLE, Texas - Freshman
Riley Whitley and Sophomore
Cala Wilson both went deep Tuesday as Lamar University took down Sam Houston, 9-4 at the Bearkat Softball Complex. The Cardinals have won four of their last five games by scoring 46 runs.
On the 11 hits by the LU offense, three came from
Cimara-lei Wessling (RBI).
Sicily Windham (RBI) had two hits while Wilson (three RBI) and Whitley (two RBI) combined for five RBIs.
Reagan Smith (four runs, four hits) earned the win by going four innings with a pair of strikeouts.
Madison Guidry earned the three-inning save, conceding just three hits and striking out two.
The Bearkats threatened early in the first inning with two runners on before
Roxy Thompson robbed a potential three-run homer to left field to preserve the scoreless frame. Following a one-out double by Windham in the top of the third, Whitley went the other way for a two-run blast. After a single by Wessling, Wilson followed with a two-run homer to make it 4-0.
LU plated three runs in the fourth as Wessling doubled in Windham from first, while three Bearkat errors led to a 7-0 Cardinal lead. Smith took a no-hitter into the fourth before the Bearkats got on the board with a solo shot. One inning later, SHSU scored three runs to get within three and had the tying run at the plate. Guidry came into the game and won the battle to escape the jam. Big Red scored two seventh-inning insurance runs on an RBI groundout by Thompson and an RBI single by Windham.
The Cardinals will head to Monroe, La., this weekend to take part in UL Monroe's Best of the Bayou Tournament. LU will open up with Arkansas Pine-Bluff Friday at noon.
