BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University pushed its win streak to four Sunday evening after sweeping a doubleheader against Lubbock Christian. The Cardinals won both matches by identical 4-1 scores.
Lamar grabbed the first point of the match with victories at Nos. 2 and 1 doubles, respectively. LCU managed to tie the match at 1 early in singles, but sophomore
Luana Paiva put Big Red back out in front with her 6-2, 6-4, decision over the Lady Chapparals' Oshini Herath. Moments later classmate
Asta Miettinen put the Cards on the doorstep of a victory with her straight-sets decision at No. 4 singles (6-2, 6-2 over Kristel Jativa).
With Miettinen's victory in hand, LU needed only one more win on the remaining three courts to take the opening match. The Cardinals didn't have to wait long as junior
Martina Alcaino recorded a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Aitanna Moreno Villa at the No. 6 position.
The second contest saw Lamar take matches on courts 1 and 2 to grab the first lead of the second match, a lead they would not relinquish. Paiva made quick work of the Lady Chaps' Kristel Jativa, 6-4, 6-0, at No. 3 singles and Alcaino made it a 3-0 advantage with her straight sets victory over LCU's Sofia Valero Trevin on court 6, 6-4, 6-1.
The Lady Chapparals finally got on the board with a victory at No. 2 doubles but junior
Savannah Bijlsma slammed the door shut on LCU with her 6-4, 6-1, victory over Moreno Villa at the No. 5 spot.
The Cardinals return to action Saturday, Feb. 14
th when they travel to Jonesboro, Ark., to face Arkansas State. The match against the Red Wolves is set to begin at 11 a.m.
