BEAUMONT, Texas – Sophomore transfer
Maxwell Lindstedt picked up two wins in the second match of a doubleheader, and three wins on the day, as Lamar University recorded a split against nationally ranked Lubbock Christian Sunday evening at the Thompson Family Tennis Center. The Cardinals dropped the morning match, 4-3, to the Chapparals but rallied right back to take the nightcap by the same score.
The Cardinals steamrolled their way to the opening lead in doubles play of the second match. Lindstedt, along with junior
Leon Nickel, recorded a 6-4 victory over LCU's top duo. The tandem of
Axel Bergh and
Rintaro Shukuda posted a victory by the same score at the No. 3 spot.
The doubles momentum carried over into singles play as
Louis Drapeau (No. 5 singles) and
Vicente Monge (No. 4) picked up straight-set victories. The duo of Drapeau and Monge surrendered a total of just nine games in the four sets.
With the first two singles wins going in Lamar's favor, Big Red would need just one win on the final four courts to celebrate the overall victory. Unfortunately for the fans who showed up in the chilly temperatures – temps that only grew colder as day gave way to night – three of the four remaining matches went to a third set while court 4 went to a tiebreak in the second set.
LCU didn't go quietly picking up hard-fought wins on courts 3, 2 and 6, placing all the focus on court 1. Lindstedt jumped out to a strong start winning the first set, 6-4, but LCU's Kelly Giese rallied for the win in the second set. Lindstedt settled in for the marathon match and defeated his opponent 7-5 in the third to wrap up the win for himself and his team.
The Cardinals jumped out to an early lead in the opening match by taking wins on courts Nos. 1 and 3 for the double point. Linstedt and Nickel gave Lamar its first win of the day. They recorded a 6-4 victory over LCU's Kelly Giese and Mattia Ghedin on court 1. The team of
Axel Bergh and
Rintaro Shukuda closed out the point with a 6-4 decision at line 3 over LCU's Jordan Georgiev and Andrea Rossi Principe.
The Chapparals managed to force their way back in front with three consecutive wins in singles to take a 3-1 lead. Lamar stopped the bleeding with singles victories from Shukuda (No. 2 singles) and
Vicente Monge (No. 5) but LCU picked up the key victory it need on court 4 to secure the overall team win.
Lamar returns to action Friday when they travel to Baton Rouge, La., to take on Southern. The match against the Jaguars is set for a 2 p.m. start.
