NEW ORLEANS, La. — For the third time this season, the Lamar University volleyball team had to engage its opponent in a five-set battle.
Maja Malinowska recorded her 400th career kill, however the Cardinals came up short to the Tulane Green Wave on Friday during Day 1 of the Green Wave Classic at Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse.
The Cardinals took an early 6-3 lead in the first set before the Green Wave used a 7-0 run to reverse the momentum and take the lead.
LU managed to get to within one point on two occasions after kills from
Kinley Elms and
Hailey McEllrath.
Tulane closed out the set on a 7-1 run to pull away with the win.
There were 15 lead changes in the second set.
The pendulum went back and forth until the Cardinals closed out the set using a 3-0 run to tie up the match.
Elms tallied two kills, which included the set point while
Daniella Udegbunam and
Lyric Jordan teamed up for a block during the final run.
In the middle of the third set, LU led by five points after putting together a 3-0 run highlighted by a kill from
Taisha Rhone and a pair of kills by Malinowska.
Tulane later went on a 5-0 run to tie up the score.
The Cardinals regained the lead before the Green Wave tied up the score late at 21-all.
LU closed things out with a 4-1 run as Elms tallied the final two kills of the set, giving her team a 2-1 advantage.
Tulane flipped the script in the fourth set.
After two early lead changes, the Green Wave took the lead and finished out the set on a 7-2 run to force a deciding fifth set.
The Cardinals gave up five unanswered points in the middle of the fifth set.
LU trailed by seven points as it could not overcome the deficit.
MATCH NOTES
- Elms led the offense with 12 kills while she also had two block assists and two digs.
- Malinowska tallied 11 kills, one assist, one service ace and 18 digs.
- Rhone added with eight kills, one block assist and eight digs.
- Jordan also had eight kills while she finished with two total blocks and five digs.
- Udegbunam finished with four total blocks.
- Gabby Baker paced the defense with 29 digs while she also had two service aces and three assists.
- Alexa Gonzalez aided the offense with 19 assists and two service aces while she tallied nine digs.
- Jo Moffitt tallied 17 assists and 13 digs.
