NEW ORLEANS, La. — On Day 2 of the Green Wave Classic, the Lamar University volleyball team rebounded with a sweep of the Southern University Jaguars, 25-21, 25-12, 25-23, on Saturday afternoon at Avron B. Fogelman Arena in Devlin Fieldhouse.
In the middle of the opening set, the Cardinals led 10-7 after a kill from
Daniella Udegbunam.
Southern surmounted a comeback by going on a 5-0 run to take a two-point lead.
The lead changed four times until LU put together a 7-2 run to pull away down the stretch.
During the run,
Maja Malinowska tallied a kill and a service ace while
Emily Moon and
Lyric Jordan both had one kill.
The Cardinals were clicking on all phases as they kept the Jaguars to seven kills in the second set.
LU's offense tallied 14 kills in the set while tallying an attack average of .423.
Southern held a three-point lead early in the set before the Cardinals used a 4-0 run to take a 10-8 lead.
Riley Johnson highlighted the run with two service aces.
Using a 5-0 run, the Cardinals extended their lead to eight. Jordan came away with a pair of kills during the offensive spree.
LU went ahead by double digits, leading by 11 points.
The Cardinals finished off the set on a 3-0 run as Jordan notched the set point with a kill to give her team a 2-0 advantage in the match.
During the final set the lead changed hands six times.
LU trailed by three in the middle of the set until it gained momentum by going on a 6-0 run to take an 18-15 lead.
The Jaguars did not want to go down quietly as they battled back to within one, but the Cardinals did not break as Moon tallied the final two kills of the set to help her team escape with the sweep.

- Jordan led the offense with 16 kills while she also had one solo block and two digs.
- Malinowska tallied 12 kills, two service aces and nine digs.

- This was the sixth meeting between both programs since 1982. LU is now 6-0 against Southern.
