BEAUMONT, Texas — Texas A&M-Corpus Christi came into the McDonald Gym Saturday afternoon pulling off a sweep of the Lamar Cardinal volleyball team.
There were two early ties in the score until the Islanders scored seven unanswered points to pull ahead, 9-2.
A&M-Corpus Christi never trailed for the rest of the set, extending its lead to 11 points.
The Islanders closed out the set on a 3-0 run.
LU scored three unanswered points early in the second set to lead 6-4.
Kinley Elms and
Daniella Udegbunam each tallied a kill during the run.
A&M-Corpus Christi then used a 3-0 run to take a one-point lead.
The Cardinals tied up the match with another kill from Udegbunam. The lead went on to change hands three times.
A&M-Corpus Christi streaked its way to a seven-point lead when it put together a 7-0 run.
LU tried to get back into the set using a 3-0 run, but the deficit was too much to overcome as the Islanders gained a 2-0 advantage.
The Cardinals jumped out to a 4-2 lead early in the third set after it scored four unanswered points.
Maja Malinowska highlighted the run with a kill and a service ace.
LU extended its lead to four points when Malinowska put down another kill and then
Hailey McEllrath had a solo block to make the score 12-7.
The Islanders went on to outscore LU, 6-1, to tie up the set at 13-all. Elms then got the lead back with a kill.
A&M-Corpus Christi went ahead by a point before
Taisha Rhone came away with a kill to tie up the score.
As the momentum went back and forth, it came down to the final stretch as the Islanders outscored the Cardinals, 3-1, to complete the sweep.
