MEMPHIS, Tenn. — On Day 1 of the Carrie Yerty Classic on Friday, the Lamar University volleyball team went 0-2.
In the first match, the Cardinals were swept by Chattanooga.
LU showed a lot of grit and fight in the nightcap against Memphis despite falling in four sets.
MATCH 1: LU vs. the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga
LU began the opening set scoring three unanswered points.
Taisha Rhone tallied a kill to keep the Cardinals ahead by three.
Chattanooga put together a 5-0 run to flip the script and take a two-point lead.
The score was then deadlocked at nine-all and from that point on the lead changed hands five times.
In the middle of the set, LU used a 4-0 run to take back the lead, capitalizing on some offensive errors by the Mocs.
Chattanooga closed things out with an 8-2 run to come out on top.
Rhone had two kills while
Lyric Jordan had one to begin the second set with a 3-1 lead for LU.
Chattanooga later went on a 6-0 run to pull ahead to a five-point lead. The Mocs never trailed for the rest of the set.
The Mocs had a four-point lead in the third set until the Cardinals cut it down to one after Jordan and
Daniella Udegbunam each tallied a kill.
LU score three unanswered points to gain a one-point lead.
The Cardinals held onto the one-point lead for as long as they could until Chattanooga scored four unanswered points to go ahead by three.
Chattanooga outscored LU, 6-2, down the stretch to pull off the sweep.
MATCH NOTES
- Maja Malinowska finished with 10 kills, one assist, one block and four digs.
- Jordan added with nine kills and three digs.
- Rhone finished with six kills and three total blocks.
- Udegbunam had four total blocks and two kills.
- Alexa Gonzalez tallied 13 assists and three digs.
- Jo Moffitt served up one ace while she also had 10 assists and seven digs.
- Gabby Baker led the defense with 16 digs.
MATCH 2: LU vs. Memphis
The Cardinals trailed 14-10 in the middle of the first set.
LU began to chip away as Jordan got three points off a pair of kills and a service ace to cut the deficit and tie up the score.
Emily Moon tallied two kills while
Sydnee Griffen and Udegbunam teamed up for a block to fuel a 3-0 run, giving LU a two-point lead.
Addison Stanley followed up with a service ace to help give her team a 1-0 advantage.
There were seven lead changes in the second set.
As the momentum shifted back and forth, the Cardinals held a one-point lead on three different occasions.
Griffen, Udegbunam and Moon all played their part by tallying a kill each time to put the Cardinals up by one.
Memphis then used a 5-0 run to pull ahead and take control of the set to tie up the match.
Early in the third set, LU gave up six unanswered points.
The Cardinals were down by five until they surmounted a comeback to tie the score up with a 3-0 run that featured a kill from Stanley and a service ace by
Keeley Nellis.
Memphis answered back with a 3-0 run of its own, taking a 22-19 lead.
LU managed to cut the deficit down to one, but in the end the Tigers held on to take a 2-1 advantage.
Memphis surged to a seven-point lead in the middle of the fourth set.
The Cardinals could not close the gap as the Tigers grew the lead to 11 to take the set and match.
MATCH NOTES
- Moon led the offense with a career-high 15 kills while she also had two blocks and two digs.
- Jordan finished with 13 kills, three service aces and nine digs.
- Griffen added with six kills and three blocks.
- The Cardinals outblocked the Tigers, 13-10. Udegbunam led the defensive front with five total blocks.
- Gonzalez aided the offense with 26 assists while she also recorded two service aces, two blocks and six digs.
- Baker finished with 17 digs and three assists.
