MEMPHIS, Tenn. — It was a back-and-forth battle Saturday afternoon at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse during the final day of the Carrie Yerty Classic.
The Lamar University volleyball team came up short in five sets against the University of Tennessee at Martin Skyhawks.
In the opening set the score was tied three times until the Skyhawks went on a 4-0 run to take the lead.
UT Martin's lead grew to six after it scored five unanswered points.
The Skyhawks led by as much as nine points before the Cardinals used a 3-0 run to cut the deficit to five.
Daniella Udegbunam highlighted the run with two crucial blocks and a kill.
LU couldn't dig its away out of the deficit as the Skyhawks took a 1-0 advantage.
After the score was tied four times at the beginning of the second set, the Cardinals surged to a five-point lead after going on a 6-0 run.
LU got kills from
Jo Moffitt and
Lyric Jordan during the surge while
Addison Stanley served up an ace.
UT Martin inched its way back by cutting the deficit to two, but the Cardinals put together a 4-0 run to grow their lead to six.
LU ended up closing out the set with a 3-0 run to tie up the match as
Taisha Rhone tallied the set point with a kill.
Early in the third set, the Cardinals were up by four points after Rhone recorded another kill.
The Skyhawks used a pair of 3-0 runs to reverse the momentum, taking a one-point lead.
LU was able to take the lead back with another kill from Rhone.
UT Martin separated itself with a 4-0 run to lead by three points.
The Cardinals surged back to tie the score after going on a 5-0 run, but UT Martin regained the lead.
LU kept up the fight, tying up the score late in the set at 21-all.
The Skyhawks closed things out with a 4-1 run to lead the match.
It was a tight fourth set as the score was tied nine times.
Using a 5-0 run, the Cardinals took an early four-point lead.
The LU lead ended up growing to seven points after a 4-0 run that saw a service ace from
Gabby Baker and a kill by Jordan.
UT Martin began to chip away by putting together a 4-0 run to cut the deficit in half and then moments later it went on a 5-0 run to tie up the score.
The lead changed six different times down the stretch until the Cardinals were able to pull away late.
Rhone delivered the set point with a kill to force a fifth set.
The see-saw battle continued into the final set as each team exchanged momentum until the Cardinals took a 14-13 lead after another kill by Rhone.
UT Martin responded by going on a 3-0 run to capture the match.
ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM
Jordan was named to the all-tournament team after she tallied 40 kills, three service aces, 27 digs and five total blocks over the weekend. She tallied a season-high 18 kills against UT Martin.

- Jordan tallied a double-double with 18 kills and 15 digs. She also tallied five total blocks.

- Emily Moon and Sydnee Griffen each tallied five kills.

- Moffitt ended up with 22 assists, two service aces, one kill and nine digs.
- Baker led the defense with 25 digs while she also had three assists and one service ace.
- The Cardinals out blocked UT Martin, 25-11.
