Four Unanswered Goals Hand Lamar Season-Opening Loss

LAFAYETTE, La. - Lamar University (0-1) opened the 2025 campaign with a 4-1 loss to UL Lafayette Thursday at the Home Bank Soccer & Track Complex. Lauren Smith gave LU an early 1-0 lead before the Ragin' Cajuns came back with four unanswered.

Off an assist by Annika Kassenbrock, Smith's goal in the 24th minute was one of her two shots she had in the contest as the Cardinals were outshot 12-5 against ULL. Newcomer Eloise Bywater made her Big Red debut in goal and recorded a pair of saves in the first half. ULL benefited from having nine corner kick opportunities while the Cardinals had two.

LU got its first shot of the game in the 14th minute before waiting another 10 minutes to score first for a 1-0 lead. The momentum shifted in the 33rd minute as ULL netted two goals from Adeline Nemeth and a penalty kick from Carson Glenn to lead 2-1 at the break.

Each side fired two shots in the second half, but ULL converted both into goals by Reagan Latiolais (65th) and Salma Elhaimer (75th) to stretch its lead to 4-1. LU's two scoring chances in the 65th and 75th minutes were both saved by Ragin' Cajuns goalkeeper Natalie Mayes, who finished with three saves for the match.

The Cardinals will quickly turn the page to Sunday as they head out to College Station to take on Texas A&M. The match is scheduled to kick off at 7:30 p.m.
