COLLEGE STATION, Texas - For 86 minutes, Lamar University found itself in a scoreless match before Texas A&M's Trinity Buchanan broke through with the game-winning goal to seal a 1-0 victory for the Aggies Sunday at Ellis Field.
Eloise Bywater recorded eight saves in goal on 22 shots faced. Eight Cardinals had one shot, with only substitute
Kamryn Harvey recording two shots in the match. A&M took 13 corners and had nine shots on goal.
The first 45 minutes had LU and Bywater withstand six Aggie shots to keep the match scoreless. After A&M hit the post on its first attempt, Bywater saved the first of her three first-half shots in the sixth minute. The Cardinals got their first shot in the 13th minute and would grab three more shots before the first half ended with a scoreless draw.
Both sides received a red card in the second half, which created a 10-on-10 game to the finish. The Aggies dominated the second half with a 16-5 shots advantage, but Bywater added five saves to keep LU in the game. The Cardinals came within a crossbar of grabbing the lead in the 78th minute. As the Aggies took possession, Buchanan had two shots blocked in the 83rd minute. Then, four minutes later, she got a third chance and scored the winner.
"It was really unfortunate to not get a result tonight against a good SEC program on the road," said head coach
Nathan Kogut. "I am proud of our focus and grit, but also how brave we were in and out of possession. Both teams dealt with some adversity, but it was a high-level match that you could tell mattered to every player. We can be frustrated to not finish the game out, but we must quickly turn the page and learn from it this week."
The Cardinals conclude their three-game road trip with a match against UTSA next Sunday. The kickoff will take place at 7 p.m.
