BEAUMONT, Texas —
Riely Hunsaker became the 100th Cardinal in program history to be selected in the Major League Baseball draft.
On Day 2 of the draft Monday, Hunsaker was picked by the Chicago Cubs in the 16th round as the 481st overall pick.
Hunsaker, a transfer from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, finished 4-3 in 14 starts with a 2.47 ERA and 1.15 WHIP in 76.2 innings pitched with 70 strikeouts.
He earned first team All-Southland Conference honors as he led the league in ERA while he was 10th in opposing batting average (.246), eighth in innings pitched, fifth in strikeouts and ninth in batters struck out looking (17).
Hunsaker also tallied the 14th best ERA in the nation while he also posted four shutouts to tie the single season program record.
He was named a Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week on May 5 after he fanned 10 batters in seven shutout innings in a Game 1 5-0 victory over Southeastern Louisiana.
Academically, Hunsaker recorded a 3.40 grade point average while majoring in university studies to earn a spot on the Southland All-Academic team.
The Southland Conference saw two other players drafted as Southeastern Louisiana's Connor O'Neal (catcher) and Brennan Stuprich (pitcher) were picked in the ninth and 14th rounds by the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees, respectively.
This marks the ninth time since 1969 that the Cubs select a Lamar Cardinal. Last year the Cubs picked up pitcher
Brooks Caple in the ninth round, who is currently with High-A affiliate South Bend.
Lamar has had a player drafted the last three consecutive seasons.
