FRISCO, Texas — Four Lamar University baseball players were named to the All-Academic team, the Southland Conference office announced Friday morning.
Damian Ruiz,
Matt Ryan and
Riely Hunsaker all earned first team recognition while
Tab Tracy was named second team.
Ruiz, a university studies major, compiled a 3.44 GPA as he was named to the dean's list for the spring semester.
He most recently earned second team central All-Region honors from the American Baseball Coaches Association.
Ruiz also garnered first team All-American recognition by 6-4-3 Charts, first team All-Southland Conference and Southland Conference Hitter of the Year.
He batted .388 in 56 starts with 214 at-bats, 76 runs scored, 83 hits, 22 doubles, two triples, seven home runs, 46 RBIs, 50 walks, a .511 on base percentage and 14 stolen bases.
Ruiz broke the single season school record for runs scored, a mark set by Tyler Link in 2009 (73 runs scored).
In addition, Ruiz also recorded the longest hitting streak in a single season (32 games), breaking Sam Bumpers 28-game hitting streak set in 2014.
Ruiz also tied the fifth highest mark for doubles, walks and batting average in a single season.
His 49-game on base streak is the longest recorded in program history in the last 15 years, surpassing
Kanin Dodge's on base streak of 33 games recorded in 2024.
Ruiz ranked in the top 10 of 10 different categories in the Southland Conference, leading the league in on base percentage, runs scored, hits and doubles.
He ended up in the top 15 nationally in on base percentage and runs scored.
Ruiz was also named a Southland Conference Hitter of the Week on Feb. 25 after going 12 for 18 (.667) during a five-game stretch with one home run, five doubles, one triple, five singles and seven RBIs.
Hunsaker compiled a 3.40 GPA in university studies while also making the spring dean's list.
He went 4-3 in 14 starts with a 2.47 ERA and 1.15 WHIP in 76.2 innings pitched and 70 strikeouts to earn first team All-Southland Conference honors.
Hunsaker led the Southland Conference in ERA while he ranked 10th in opposing batting average (.246), eighth in innings pitched, fifth in strikeouts and ninth in batters struck out looking (17).
He also sported the 14th best ERA in the nation.
Hunsaker recorded four shutouts, tying the single season program record.
One of the shutouts earned him Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week honors on May 5 as he struck out 10 batters in seven shutout innings to defeat Southeastern Louisiana in Game 1 by a score of 5-0.
Ryan, a business analytics major, recorded a 3.54 GPA which also earned him a spot on the spring dean's list.
He batted .283 in 51 games played and 46 starts with 138 at-bats, 47 runs scored, 39 hits, seven doubles, one triple, eight home runs, 31 RBIs and 34 walks.
Ryan ended the season going 7 for 15 (.467) with a double, two home runs and eight RBIs.
He ranked fourth in the Southland Conference in on base percentage (.476), 10th in on base + slugging percentage (.998) and third in hit by pitch (18).
Ryan was named first team All-Southland Conference and second team preseason All-Southland Conference.
Tracy sported a 3.88 GPA while majoring in university studies. He was named to both the dean's and president's lists for the spring semester.
He batted .309 in 53 starts with 178 at-bats, 47 runs scored, 55 hits, seven doubles, one triple, 39 RBIs, 37 walks and 19 stolen bases.
Tracy finished tied for fifth in the Southland Conference in walks, second in sacrifice bunts (8) and tied for fifth in stolen bases.
