Cards shutout Lions, 5-0, in Game 1

HAMMOND, La. — Behind a solid outing from Riely Hunsaker, Lamar University shutout Southeastern Louisiana, 5-0, on Friday night during Game 1 at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.

This is the fourth shutout of the season recorded by the Cards.

Matt Ryan got the Cards on the board with a leadoff solo home run in the top of the second.

In the top of the third, Damian Ruiz drew a leadoff walk and then Brayden Evans hit a single to right center.

Tab Tracy then brought in Ruiz on a fielder's choice to short.

Later, with two outs, Ryan loaded up the bases by reaching first on an error by the shortstop.

Reese Beheler drew a bases-loaded walk to extend the lead to 3-0.

After a leadoff double through the left side by Ruiz in the top of the sixth, Tracy hit a routine grounder to the second baseman that was thrown far right of the first baseman, allowing Ruiz to score.

Heladio Moreno later extended LU's lead to 5-0 with a fielder's choice to short that brought in Ryan in the top of the seventh.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Ryan finished 2 for 4 with a double, home run, a walk and an RBI. He has homered in two straight games while he rides a three-game hitting streak going 6 for 14 during the span with five RBIs.
  • Evans had two singles to go 2 for 5.
  • Ruiz extended his on base streak to 48 games and hitting streak to 31 games as he went 1 for 4 with a double and a walk.
  • Zane Spinn and Tracy each went 1 for 5 with a single. Tracy also recorded his 35th RBI of the season.
  • Beheler tallied a single and two walks to go 1 for 3 with an RBI.
  • Hunsaker struck out 10 batters in seven innings while allowing four hits to improve to 3-2. He also recorded his third shutout win of the season.
  • Hunsaker matched his season-high of 10 strikeouts that was set on March 7 against Stephen F. Austin.
  • Austin Neal fanned two batters in two innings of relief as he did not allow a hit or run.
  • LU's pitching staff got a strikeout for the third out six times, which includes the final out of the game.
