CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Sophomore
Savannah Bijlsma defeated Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Juliette Jalai in three sets but it was not enough as the Islanders defeated LU, 6-1, Monday afternoon in a contest that was closer than the final score indicated. Three of the of six singles courts went to a third set with the Islanders taking two of those three matches.
It marked the second consecutive Southland singles win for Bijlsma but in almost mirror image of the Saturday's contest the Cardinals failed to gain any more victories.
After Bijlsma was forced to a third set, she took control in the extra frame. She put the Cardinals on the board with a 6-4, 2-6, 10-5 decision at the No. 6 position.
Teammates
Arina Gudovskaya (No. 1 singles) and
Luana Paiva (No. 4) also forced a third but came up short in their attempts to follow suit. The Cardinals will now turn their attention to a Saturday contest against New Orleans. The match against the Privateers is set for a 1 p.m. start from the Thompson Family Tennis Center.
