Cards split doubleheader with UT Arlington

BEAUMONT, Texas — On a cool Sunday afternoon at Vincent-Beck Stadium, the Lamar University Cardinals split a doubleheader with the UT Arlington Mavericks to take the series two games to three.

LU won the first game, 6-5, on a walk off double by Zak Skinner. The Mavericks pushed across three runs in the eighth to pull off a 4-2 win in the series finale.

GAME 2

The Mavericks took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a throwing error.

UT Arlington extended its lead to 2-0 on an RBI single to center in the top of the second.

Zane Spinn hit a two-out single to right center to setup the RBI triple to right by Matt Ryan to cut the deficit to one run in the bottom of the second.

Later in the inning, Bryce Grizzaffi brought in a run on a single to the pitcher to tie the game.

In the top of the third, the Mavericks went ahead by two runs after pushing across a run on a groundout to third and an RBI double to left center.

UT Arlington extended its lead to three with a solo home run in the fourth.

The Cardinals rallied back in the bottom of the seventh beginning with an RBI double to right center by Skinner and an RBI single to left center by Heladio Moreno.

Damian Ruiz tied up the game with a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth.

To setup the bottom of the ninth, Tab Tracy drew a walk and then Skinner doubled down the right field line to deliver LU's second straight walk off victory.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Ruiz went 3 for 3 with two singles, a home run, two walks and an RBI.
  • Skinner finished 2 for 5 with a single, double and two RBIs.
  • Spinn had a single, double and two walks to go 2 for 2.
  • Ryan finished 2 for 4 with a single, triple and an RBI.

  • Peyton Havard faced one batter in 0.1 innings to pick up the win, improving to 4-1.
GAME 3

LU went ahead 2-0 in the bottom of the first after a two-run home run by Skinner.

The Mavericks cut the deficit to one run in the top of the third with an RBI single.

UT Arlington pushed across three runs without tallying a single hit in the top of the eighth. The Mavericks scored runs on a bases-loaded walk, fielder's choice and a fielding error to flip the script and take the lead.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Ruiz finished 1 for 4 with a single to extend his on base streak to 33 games and his hitting streak to 16 games.
  • Skinner went 1 for 3 with a home run, two RBIs and a walk.
  • Hector Rodriguez tallied a double to go 1 for 4.
  • Grizzaffi finished 1 for 2 with a single.
  • Easton Culp had a pinch-hit ground-rule double in the eighth to go 1 for 1.
  • Chris Olivier struck out seven batters in seven innings to claim the no decision.
