EDINBURG, Texas – For the second straight Southland Conference match, the final result came down to the doubles competition as the two teams split the singles matches but in the end UT Rio Grande Valley prevailed with the 4-3 decision.
In an almost identical script to the conference opener against UIW, the Cardinals fell behind early after dropping the doubles point, but battled back to tie the match at 2 after winning two of the first three singles matches. Sophomore
Leon Nickel got the Cardinals on the board with his straight-sets victory over Sam Whitehead at No. 1 singles (6-2, 6-3) followed shortly by
Fabian Anthin's 6-4, 7-6 (7-0) decision over Loic Young at the No. 4 spot.
The Cardinals took their first lead of the day when freshman
Louis Drapeau defeated UTRGV's Eduardo Menezes, 7-6, 6-0, at No. 6 singles. Unfortunately for the Red and White, the hometown Vaqueros closed out the day with victories at Nos. 2 and 5 singles for the overall win.
The Cardinals will now look to get back in the win column Monday when they travel to Corpus Christi, Texas to take on the Islanders. The match against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi is set for a 2 p.m. start.
