BEAUMONT, Texas — It came down to the bottom of the ninth for the Lamar University Cardinals.
With one out and runners at first and third,
Brayden Evans delivered the walk-off RBI single to right to lift the Cardinals over the UT Arlington Mavericks, 3-2, on a blustery Friday night at Vincent-Beck Stadium.
The Cardinals have now won 10 in a row.
LU took the lead in the bottom of the third on a fielder's choice to short off the bat of
Tab Tracy, which brought in
Hector Rodriguez.
Heladio Moreno hit a leadoff triple in the bottom of the fourth and then
Zane Spinn followed up with an RBI single to left center to extend the lead to 2-0.
The Mavericks tied up the score in the top of the seventh on a passed ball and an RBI double that ricocheted off the third base bag off the bat of Xander McAfee.
Setting up the bottom of the ninth,
Bryce Grizzaffi drew a leadoff walk and then
Connor Kaiser moved him over with a sacrifice bunt.
Rodriguez grounded out to short to allow Grizzaffi to move to third.
Damian Ruiz was intentionally walked to bring up Evans.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Evans finished 4 for 5 with four singles and an RBI. This was his third four-hit game of the season.
- Moreno went 1 for 4 with the triple to extend his hit streak to eight games.
- Spinn finished 1 for 4 with a single and an RBI. He leads the team with 34 RBIs.
- Grizzaffi had a single to go 1 for 3 with a walk.
- Ruiz had an infield single and a walk to go 1 for 4. He extends his on base streak to 31 games and his hitting streak to 14 games.
- Riely Hunsaker went seven innings allowing five hits and one earned run while he tallied seven strikeouts.
- Luke Krkovski improved to 3-0 after he threw two innings with one strikeout while he allowed one hit.
