SAN ANTONIO, Texas -
Veronica Harrison's first-inning RBI single was all Lamar University (28-25, 15-12 SLC) could get as it fell to UIW (28-19,17-10 SLC), 8-1 in Sunday's regular-season finale at H-E-B Field. Big Red finishes the regular season as the fifth seed and will head to Lake Charles, La., for the first round of the Southland Conference tournament.
Of LU's five hits, Harrison posted two.
Gracee Hess,
Cala Wilson, and
Makenzie Wright also tallied a hit.
Kaylee Cuevas was tagged with the loss, allowing three runs in a third of an inning.
After a leadoff single by Hess to open the game, Harrison drove her in giving LU a 1-0 lead. UIW answered with three runs in the bottom of the first before adding a solo homer two innings later to go up 4-1. Lamar threatened in the top of the fourth with two runners on, but
Ava Blakely grounded out to end the inning. UIW plated four more runs over the next three innings to close out the 8-1 win.
Big Red and UIW will meet each other in the first round of the tournament Thursday. The game time has yet to be announced.
