Cards drop midweek contest to Cougars

HOUSTON, Texas — Lamar University suffered its first midweek loss of the season, falling to the University of Houston Cougars, 11-6, Tuesday night at Schroeder Park.

LU moves to 12-1 in midweek contests.

The Cougars put up six runs on five hits in the top of the first inning. Colby DeJesus' single to right field brought in three runs after the fielder couldn't quite come up with ball.

Tyler Cox added to the inning with a two-RBI double down the right field line while Riley Jackson hit an RBI single through the left side.

In the top of the fourth, LU cut the deficit to two runs. Tab Tracy, Zak Skinner and Zane Spinn tallied three straight singles to load up the bases.

Matt Ryan then drew a six-pitch walk to erase the deficit.

Heladio Moreno followed up with a clutch two-RBI single to left center to make the score 6-3.

Damian Ruiz added to the rally with an RBI double down the left field line.

Houston answered back in the bottom of the fourth by rallying for four runs that came on a wild pitch, hit batter with bases loaded, an RBI single to right by Cade Climie and a bases-loaded walk.

The Cougars extended their lead to seven runs in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI single to center from Tre Broussard.

After three-straight scoreless innings, the Cards got a two-run home run from Reese Beheler in the top of the eighth.
