BEAUMONT, Texas — Lamar University snapped its three-game losing streak with a 14-3 seven-inning victory over the Prairie View A&M Panthers on a wet and gloomy Wednesday night at Vincent-Beck Stadium.
The Cardinals were walked 20 times, falling five short of tying the all-time NCAA record for walks drawn by a team in a single game.
Prairie View A&M took a 2-0 lead on a two-RBI double to left center by Mac Bowie in the top of the first.
In the bottom half of the inning, three-straight walks were issued to LU to load up the bases.
Zak Skinner hit into a double play which brought in a run.
Five walks were issued in the bottom of the first.
LU batters were walked twice with one out to setup an RBI single to left by
Brayden Evans in the bottom of the second.
Tab Tracy followed up with an RBI single through the right side to put the Cards ahead 3-2.
Matt Ryan drew a walk with the bases loaded to extend LU's lead to two runs.
After three walks and a sacrifice bunt by
Damian Ruiz, Tracy brought in a run on a fielder's choice to short in the bottom of the third.
LU had its leadoff batter reach on a walk for the fourth-straight inning.
The Cards rallied for eight runs on four hits in the bottom of the fourth.
Hector Rodriguez drew a walk with the bases loaded to get things going.
Ruiz then delivered a two-RBI single through the left side. Evans followed up with an RBI double to right center.
Ruiz later scored on a wild pitch to make the score 10-2.
The Cards then got back-to-back RBI singles from
Zane Spinn and Ryan to go up by 11 runs.
Prairie View A&M pushed across its final run in the top of fifth when Sonnier Moses scored on a double play.
The final run of the night for LU came off a leadoff solo home run by Spinn in the bottom of the sixth.
