LU falls to Northwestern State in series finale

NATCHITOCHES, La. — Northwestern State scored five runs across four innings to defeat Lamar University, 7-2, in Game 3 on Saturday afternoon at Brown-Stroud Field.

The Demons got on the board in the bottom of the third after Reese Lipoma scored on a wild pitch.

Balin Valentine then hit an RBI double to center to extend the lead to 2-0.

LU erased the shutout when Brayden Evans hit a sacrifice fly to right to bring in Heladio Moreno in the top of the fifth.

Northwestern State added a run on an error in the bottom half of the fifth.

The Demons took advantage of two walks and a single in the bottom of the sixth to make the score 4-1 after a sacrifice squeeze bunt brought in a run.

Mason Wray gave the Demons a four-run lead in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI double to right.

Reese Beheler cut the deficit to three with a solo home run to right center in the top of the eighth.

Northwestern State answered back with two runs in the bottom half of the eighth after an RBI groundout to first and an RBI single to right center.

Damian Ruiz hit a solo home run off the left field foul pole in the top of the ninth.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Ruiz went 2 for 3 with a single, home run and a walk to extend his on base streak to 41 games and his hitting streak to 24 games.
  • Beheler finished 2 for 3 with a single, home run, a walk and an RBI. He went 5 for 8 in his last two games.
  • Moreno had two singles to go 2 for 4.
  • Zak Skinner, Tab Tracy and Zane Spinn all went 1 for 4 with a single.
