Cards out slug Texans, 22-16

STEPHENVILLE, Texas — It was a slugfest between Lamar University and Tarleton State on Tuesday afternoon.

Both teams combined for nine home runs, 18 extra base hits and 38 runs.

In the end, the Cards held off the Texans for a 22-16 victory at the Tarleton Baseball Complex.

LU has won nine in a row while it improves to 10-0 in midweek games.

It didn't take long for the LU offense to get going.

As Damian Ruiz and Tab Tracy each drew a walk and Brayden Evans singled to load up the bases, Zak Skinner followed up with a grand slam.

The Texans tied up the score in the bottom half of the first.

Tarleton State then took a 7-4 lead in the bottom of the second as it scored three runs on a three-run home run by Slade McCloud.

LU got a run back in the top of the third on an RBI double by Zane Spinn.

Tarleton State responded by getting a run off of a sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the third.

The Cardinals rallied for eight runs in the top of the fourth to break open the floodgates.

Skinner delivered an RBI single while Heladio Moreno hit an RBI double to left center. Spinn followed up with an RBI single through the left side.

Logan Hamm went yard by hitting a three-run home run to right and then Hector Rodriguez followed up with a solo home run to left making the score 13-8.

Skinner belted his second home run of the afternoon in the top of the fifth as he hit a two-run shot to right.

Hamm sparked a four-run rally in the top of the sixth by hitting a leadoff solo home run to center.

Evans, Moreno and Spinn each had an RBI single to give the Cards a 10-run lead.

The Texans did not go down quietly as they got a grandslam from Tyson Drake in the bottom of the seventh to make the score 19-13.

LU pushed across three more runs in the top of the ninth as Rodriguez hit an RBI double and Skinner tallied two RBIs off a double to right center.

Drake belted a three-run home run for the Texans in the bottom of the ninth, but the rally was cut short after Hayden Stallings got back-to-back strikeouts.
