Lamar Knocks Off Rattlers

BEAUMONT, Texas – After falling behind 2-1, the Lamar University men's tennis team rallied to take a lead and never looked back posting a 5-2 decision over St. Mary's (TX) Wednesday afternoon at the Thompson Family Tennis Center. The victory moved LU to 9-6 (.600) on the season and 2-0 on the current six-match homestand.

Lamar took the first lead of the day after winning all three doubles matches. The Cardinals secured the point with wins on courts 2 and 1, respectively, surrendering just three games in the two matches. Big Red also took the final match just for good measure.

The Rattlers had a response with victories on courts 4 and 1 to take a 2-1 lead early in singles. Lamar didn't panic but regrouped with the equalizer coming from freshman Louis Drapeau at line 5. Drapeau recorded a convincing straight-sets decision with a 6-3, 6-1 score over the Rattlers Bernhard Hauer.

With the match tied a 2, senior Haruki Omori-Cowie put the Cardinals back in front with his 6-1, 6-1 victory over St. Mary's Daniel Matheu Baldor at the No. 2 position. Omori-Cowie put Big Red in the driver's seat with two matches remaining and needing only one win. The Cardinals closed out the match by taking both courts for the final score.

The Cardinals continue the current homestand Friday with at 1 p.m. match against Abilene Christian.
